Abstract
The main aim of this paper is the symbolic representation of the Ukrainian steppe in poems of great Polish poets (Malczewski, Mickiewicz, Goszczyński, Słowacki). Attention is devoted to describe how the Ukrainian steppe (as a geographical space that is all the time the same) changes in poems of different authors. The steppe in Malczewski's "Maria" is a methaphisical representation of the world, it is a realisation of philosophical and mental landscape as well as a projection of the feelings of the author. This steppe defines a world which is full of pain and mental suffering, it is a world where hope doesn't exists. In Mickiewicz's "Crimean Sonnets", the space of the steppe is connected with a journey's topic. This journey can be interpreted in many different ways: a journey across the steppe, a journey into memories and different thoughts, into humans' mind, history and being. The steppe in Goszczyński's "Zamek kaniowski" is shown as a hell upon earth, a place where the main power is rebellion and crime. The steppe in Słowacki's "Beniowski" is a vast plane dotted with innumerable prehistoric barrows, symbols of transience and death, and, at the same a wilderness teeming with life. It is a place where one is free to commune with history and with God.
