- Abstract
- Standard & Poor has downgraded the state of Greece to non-investment level; but the ratings of the 3 agencies (Fitch, Moody's) differ. Numerous so-called financial experts and economiists working for banks and investment companies confirm the panicky climate about the solvability of Greece, Portugal, Spain - all three have socialists governments. Commercial media widely propagate these opinions. Often the banks were saved by government intervention, or their staff are under investigation for fraud, for example with CDO's of subprimes. They reserve billions for settlements and bad investment. Hedgefunds made billions of profit bedding against pound sterling or the subprime market while selling subprime derivatives to their clients. Secretary-general of the OECD Gurria compares Greece to Ebola virus: "...you have to cut off a leg in order to survive". Meanwhile corporations publish rising profit of billions. A different approach is proposed by the international trade unions ITUC: the financial transaction tax that might generate 200 to 900 billion dollar per year depending on modalities and rates between 0.01-0.5%.
