- Abstract
- If culture is in part responsible for creating the distinction between officers and the public, and An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national policing organisation, is known to have a very strong culture that has been in place for almost a century, the natural conclusion would then be that there is also a strong division between the officers and the public. However, how this concept found in international police culture is manifested in a policing organisation with a strongly stated community policing ethos is conflicted. It would seem unlikely that a community policing model and a divide between the two groups could work in harmony and that is what this research intends to explore. This data was thematically analysed from various documents spanning a 30-year period. This presentation provides a scarcely researched topic in Ireland, how the organisation’s culture affects what is supposed to be a community oriented policing organisation and how this contributes to an us vs. them feeling in Ireland. The data indicates that there is a divide present between the Irish police and the Irish people. Though this is not necessarily behaviour exhibited but all members of the organisation, there are structural components within the organisation’s culture that contribute to this divide.
