Making sense of process evaluation : exploring the theory-of-change underlying a sport-for-development intervention to promote health in socially vulnerable populations

Abstract
This chapter examines how a process evaluation is developed and implemented for a pilot health promotion intervention situated within a sport-for-development (SFD) setting. First, the underpinning logic for a rigorous process evaluation is explained in order to clarify how the intervention works in practice. Second, key process evaluation components such as context, reach, dose, fidelity, implementation, and recruitment are discussed, and the interventions’ selected components that could lead to its desired change are identified. Mechanisms of impact are disentangled and the extent to which contextual factors impacted implementation and/or impact is evaluated. Third, the chapter informs on the use of a qualitative design and methods for the process evaluation and measures adopted, and highlights examples of process evaluation questions. This includes the planning of process evaluation and a description of how one can work together with locally embedded implementers. Finally, the chapter discusses some of the main strengths and challenges of a specific process evaluation with regard to the choice of the evaluation design, the development and selection of measures, resources required, and the overall process of quality assurance and good working relationships with stakeholders.
