- Abstract
- The Maps in Context project is a searchable relational web database, that makes it possible to register, connect and trace original data about maps, cartographers and cartographic practices from the past. Hence, the project offers a solution to the problem that information about the context in which old maps were created, used and preserved is usually kept separately from those maps themselves. In other words, the links between the maps and the contextual data are often lost. Besides restoring these connections, a more general objective of the project is to fill in the many gaps in the history of cartography of the Low Countries, by collecting information about lesser-known maps and cartographers and making it accessible. This article explains the basic principles and functionalities of the Maps in Context web database starting from two concrete examples: on the one hand the search for contextual information on the hand-drawn map of the so-called Heistendries in Landegem by G. de Deken from 1749, which is kept in private hands, and on the other hand the analysis of a map list by the Ghent collector Pierre-Jacques Goetghebuer (1788-1866).
