Abstract
This paper deals with two seldom described discourse functions of the reflexes of Proto-Bantu applicative ✶-ɪd in Fwe (K402), a Bantu language spoken in Zambia and Namibia. These functions are: (i) signaling some sort of narrow focus on an applied phrase expressing General Location, and (ii) widening the “orientation” of a locative phrase from involving the object of a transitive verb root to involving also the subject of that transitive verb root (e.g. John saw Mary on the boat implies only Mary is for sure on the boat; John saw Mary-APPL on the boat implies both John and Mary are on the boat). The Fwe data are special in that they reveal so-far unattested variations and interpretations in these two uses. With respect to (i), we show that the applicative can optionally combine with other focus-marking strategies such as cleft constructions to express completive and contrastive focus. With respect to (ii), preliminary data suggest that the applicative in Fwe can modify the scope of the Location applied phrase to include the speaker who utters a sentence instead of the grammatical subject of the utterance. To our knowledge, this possibility has not been previously attested. Finally, we conclude by showing how Fwe data bear on the diachrony of the functions of PB applicative ✶-ɪd.
