Abstract
This chapter discusses international staff mobility, the temporal or more structural physical migration of academics across national borders. It first explores what the concept of academic mobility entails. It subsequently addresses the drivers for mobility and shows how contemporary academic mobility can be seen as being guided by individual motivations (pushing and pulling academics), institutional strategies and (supra)national policies. The chapter furthermore discusses the benefits and impacts of mobility, as well as the downsides and barriers. These sections make clear that undoubtedly there are positive impacts of migration, but that (potential) downsides, barriers and problems should not be underestimated. In the final section, we reflect on the findings and offer some guidance to higher education management.
