Abstract
The Sortes Sangallenses (IV-V cent.) are a corpus of 525 divinatory responses fragmentarily preserved in the codex Sangallensis 908, also known as rex palimpsestorum. In the present contribution we discuss linguistic questions related to these texts. The first part analyses the systematic search for variation characterising their language and presents a comparison with the Egyptian oracle Sortes Astrampsychi. The second part focusses on the one hand on the position of verb and direct object, which appears to obey to certain information-structural criteria, and, on the other hand, on the relationship between type of language and social status of the clients.
