- Abstract
- Monochrome white with striking colour accents. The interior finishing in its context. Following a major fire during World War I the plaster in Saint Peter's church in Leuven was removed in 1925. The stone face has since then been apparent. Bombing during World War II again caused considerable damage. During the latest restoration the nave and transept were given back a painted finishing covering the stone and brick construction, as it would have been immediately after the construction in the 15th century. The choice for this method was based on material technical as well as art historical motives. The church interior in monochrome white with some local, striking colour accents is indeed typical for the final phase in the development of 15th century Gothic churches in the Southern Netherlands. Besides the white basis painting with architectural colour accents, chapels in the choir and nave were also decorated by the founders or later users. Some remarkable testimonies thereof have been preserved on site or recorded in reports. There are also iconographical sources giving information on the wall and vault painting which had disappeared. Two World Wars had indeed not spared Saint Peter's church.
