Abstract
Paris, Capital of Fashion is a collection of essays edited by Valerie Steele that accompanies an exhibition of the same name, also curated by Steele, on view at the Museum at FIT from 6 September 2019 until 4 January 2020. As Steele writes in her preface, the seven essays—written, in order, by Steele, Christopher Breward, David Gilbert, Grazia d’Annunzio, Antonia Finnane, Sophie Kurkdjian and Agnès Rocamora—explore the cultural construction of Paris as ‘the capital of fashion’ by tracing its history and placing the Parisian fashion industry within a ‘broader, global narrative’. The scope of the essays spans from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. Studies of London, New York, Rome, Milan, Shanghai and Beijing show how other urban cities have used ‘Paris fashion’ to their advantage or have reacted against it. Extensive colour photographs of historical and contemporary garments, fashion plates and photographs illustrate the essays in this handsome and notable production.
