Abstract
Which factors in our democratic politics hamper participation of any citizen? There is a multitude of organisations, societies and parties that welcome members and followers, and that fit any opinion or profession. However, an individual must always accept majority rule. When it comes to governments, coalitions of divergent parties are the custom; this minimizes the impact of each party's program and of opinions of individuals. Moreover, parts of society management have been decided by earlier laws, European and international treaties, and actors independent of elected governments: private corporations which produce food and most other products, and create half of the jobs approximately. Finally large amounts of capital are moved in de stock markets by anonymous traders. These complex processes are barely explained by the media, and not understood by most citizens, who have the feeling that nobody is caring for them. Their appreciation is determined by the constant negative news and demonizing of politicians by media. As a consequence, democratic participation by everyone is far away.
