Abstract
This article aims to present a select case study on the iconography of the Dioscuri’s caps at Tindari (Messina, Italy). The study has been carried out within the Token Communities in the Ancient Mediterranean project (University of Warwick, UK), funded by the European Research Council. In particular, the article focuses on a 3rd-century AD mosaic representing two caps of the Dioscuri (pilei), two crossed swords and a bull, discovered at the insula IV of Tindari in the 1950s. The iconography shows direct links with the local Tyndaris’ coinage and a newly re-discovered clay token, dated to the end of 1st century BC. Such set of iconographical elements demonstrates how local religious and civic traditions persisted in the small Sicilian communities from the Hellenistic to the Roman period.
