- Abstract
- According to Thierry Groensteen metamorphosis is a narrative theme that has been used and abused in traditional comics (according to Groensteen) (164). By focusing on early comics for children in Spain, this article seeks to understand the motif of metamorphosis. On the one hand, transformations within strips from the first decade of TBO are studied from the perspective of comics’ theory by Groensteen.. On the other, the motif and its (dis)empowering effect on child protagonists is/are discussed from the perspective of children’s literary studies by Lassén-Seger and Nikolajeva. The article shows, that TBO, as a humouristic children’s magazine did not star many children or never really serialized protagonists (notwithstanding the boy TBO and his shortlived female counterpart BB). This suggests, as Martín and Baena confirm, that a broader readership was targeted than the magazine’s subtitle suggested. TBO, furthermore, adapted the motif lightly as opposed to the moral use in children’s literature, consequence of the comic effect the magazine aimed. After all, TBO was governed by the comercial drive and politics of entertainment of its director, Joaquín Buigas.
