Abstract
As is known, Modern French plein has various usages that can be associated with different word classes. The most intriguing use is without any doubt the so-called prepositional use (II a des billes plein les poches, litt. He has marbles full the pockets 'he has his pockets full of marbles, he has plenty of marbles in his pockets'). We first show that the traditional analyses of this pre-determiner use fall short and that the only way out is to consider plein as part of a (non-compositional) construction. Moreover, it is argued that there is another construction (Construction B), which cannot simply be disregarded as an obsolete variant of Construction A, since it is both syntactically and semantically different (Il a plein les poches de billes). The main part of the paper is devoted to the origins and diachronic filiations between these two constructions, up to 1800. In a nutshell, A has been gaining importance, to the expense of B. Various mechanisms have come into play, such as reanalysis, the interplay between word order and agreement/reanalysis, and several conceptual mechanisms such as metonymic inferencing. In addition, the history of these constructions of plein has been influenced by broader typological shifts related to word order and determination.
