- Abstract
- The role of Belgium within the context of deep sea mining cannot be underestimated, as Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR), a subsidiary of the Belgian DEME Group who obtained an exploration contract for polymetallic nodules in the Area in 2013, plays a pivotal part in the development of deep sea mining technology in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone. Belgium adopted deep sea mining legislation in 2013, implementing the international rules and principles on deep sea mining and issuing procedures and conditions for the granting of a certificate of sponsorship by the Belgian government, and also has a legal framework in place to govern sand and gravel mining on its continental shelf. This part analyses the relevant Belgian legislation, as well as the related decisions and activities.
- Keywords
