A framework for the description of age-related symptoms in audio media : definition and implementation

Abstract
The assessment of the state of degradation of audio carriers is a crucial step in the preservation workflow. This requires targeted diagnostic tools, and a shared vocabulary to describe the symptomatology in an objective way. This article presents a framework for the evaluation of the symptoms and signs of degradation of audio media, with a comprehensive dictionary including 182 unique definitions, applied to eight different audio media types. A five stepped rating scale is associated to each item in the dictionary. Multimedia reference material is provided for comparative purposes. The article also includes a detailed description of the framework's implementation in a relational database, in the form of an independent module that can easily be integrated in existing information management systems. The possibility to develop the evaluation reference system into a collaborative 'hypermedia knowledge base' is built into the framework's design. The technology to start accumulating a critical mass of data is available and inexpensive, and it would help achieve much more consistent evaluations not just at collection level but across collections.
