- Abstract
- Answering the call by Belgian minister Alexander De Croo, I make 2 proposals to discourage fake news. 1) Consult the primary sources of news/information. Newspapers and social media are not primary sources; publications in refereed scientific journals are, as well as the original programs by trade unions, political parties, public authorities, businesses, their organisations and their spokespersons. Moreover, information should be complete, as required in in science. But actual "news" is mostly incomplete and biased. I gave examples here: https://humanistischverbond.be/blog/22/moeten-we-david-en-patrick-beter-informeren/ 2) Authors should identify themselves, instead of the anonymous and false accounts that are the rule in social media. Anonymity covers irresponsibility and criminal behaviour, defamation and terrorist conspiracy. Legislation should enjoin internet media to publish true authorship.
