Abstract
On 9 May 2018, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has delivered, unanimously, an important judgment with regard to the conditions of interferences by public authorities with extremist speech. The ECtHR found that the Russian authorities have violated Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) that guarantees the right to freedom of (political) expression. With its judgment, the ECtHR urged governments to be cautious when considering what is hate speech and what is criticism of the authorities.
