- Abstract
- The term ‘Lotharingian reforms’ is commonly used to reference interventions, during the tenth and early 11th centuries, in the discipline and organization of a significant number of groups of religious men and women in the former Middle Kingdom of Lotharingia. Contrary to the assertions of older scholarship, one cannot speak of a cohesive movement pursuing the emancipation and homogenization of regional monasticism, nor can one detect institutional affiliations emerging from membership of such a movement. However, reformist agents across the region did share in the pursuit of a community life that was shaped by early ninth-century interpretations of the Benedictine Rule, subsequent ones from Fleury and perhaps also Cluny, and ascetic trends in male and female spirituality. Another common factor was that monastic leaders went to great lengths to accommodate the interests of the clerical and lay rulers who took the initiative to reform a given community. These rulers also typically retained a high degree of control over such communities post-reform.
