Bending fatigue of reinforced self-compacting concrete beams

Abstract
Fatigue failure of reinforced concrete elements in bending may occur due to rebar fatigue fracture or due to spa/ling of the concrete in the compression zone. An extensive crack pattern is formed, causing progressive deterioration of the bond between the reinforcement and the concrete, or resulting in a redistribution of stresses in the compression zone, thus pushing out a large piece of concrete, respectively. The fatigue crack propagation process and failure of normal, vibrated concrete (VG) is well-understood, but for self-compacting concrete (SCC), with a substantially different composition, a distinct cracking and fatigue resistance might be expected. This paper presents the results of a comparative research in which reinforced concrete beams, made from VG, SCC with similar strength, and sec with equal w/c ratio, are subjected to bending fatigue with various loading ranges. Based on the examination of several mechanical properties, including failure mechanism, deflection, strain, and crack width evolution, the imposed stress level is shown to be crucial regarding the fatigue performance of the specimens.
