- Abstract
- Gender inequality and environmental degradation are closely intertwined. As they share common roots and are both symptoms of deeper systemic problems, these injustices need to be tackled simultaneously. This doctoral thesis examines the role that international law and policy plays in linking these injustices. More specifically, this thesis examines to what extent and how the three Rio Conventions have contributed to this process. It first examines the long legal and policy journey towards linking gender and the environment at the international level. Next, a detailed analytical assessment of the integration of gender considerations within the frameworks of the Rio Conventions is provided, including a discussion of parallells and differences among the Conventions. To conclude, key legal, policy and advocacy recommendations are made, which could further guide the integration of gender considerations in the framework of the Rio Conventions
