Plotlifting : the transposition of French stories in the nineteenth-century Spanish Press

Abstract
Though difficult to find, these adaptations offer a unique perspective on the process of cultural translation. Because the model and the imitation are extremely close, the elements that are in fact changed are particularly revealing; they offer a window into the taboos and values of the local culture. This essay will examine three texts published in the nineteenth-century Spanish press that are clear rewritings of French stories from the same period. It explores what it takes to make these foreign stories work in a Spanish context.
Keywords
plotlifting, unacknowledged adaptation, transposition, translation, Spanish literature, French literature, nineteenth century, Guy de Maupassant, Jules Ricard, Louis Ulbach
