Tradities zijn verandering

Hendrik Pinxten UGent and Koenraad De Munter UGent (2009) VOLKSKUNDE. 110(3-4). p.271-292
abstract
In the standard view the notion Of tradition is tightly linked with concepts of constancy, inalterability and the ensuing rights and duties. In the present contribution We analyse this concept from the point of view of researchers who are rather more Familiar with oral Cultures. We state that concepts of time and temporality can be very different in these Cultures. In the past, we suggest, we were misled to some extent by the western notion of time and the attached so-called opposition between our 'warm' or historical Culture and the non-western 'cold' traditions, as voiced by levi-Strauss. With S. Kauffman's complexity theory applied to culture and tradition, We offer a new approach.
