- Abstract
- The decline of the cork oak forest in the Mediterranean Basin has been described since the XIX century. This is a multifactorial disease, characterized by symptoms such as dieback and vascular necrosis, culminating in host death. The oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi, a known pathogen, is considered one of the main biological factors associated to the decline of the cork oak. Nonetheless, other pathogens, namely fungi, have been consistently collected from symptomatic plants. This is the case of the filamentous fungus Diplodia corticola, a pathogen that was already considered the most virulent fungus associated to the decline of the cork oak, inducing more aggressive symptoms than P. cinnamomi. On the other hand, D. corticola was already described in other European countries and in North America as a pathogen of oaks, grapevines and eucalyptus. Therefore, understanding this pathogen’s infection mechanisms is fundamental to help diminishing or suppressing the negative impacts it has on the forests.
