Publieke sculpturen van de hand van vrouwen: de casus Brussel

- For centuries both sculpture and urban public space have been defined as a “male” domain. Yet there were significantly more female sculptors than assumed, whose sculptures were assigned a place in (semi-)public spaces, even in art metropolises, and that since the late 18th century. How much this contradicts the established male-female roles, and enables us to disprove the so-called exclusion of women from the public sphere or whether the phenomenon may ultimately be just another confirmation of this theory remains unclear at the moment. For the first time the (semi-)public sculptures by women in a metropolis, namely Brussels, Paris and London are mapped for a period of almost two centuries, roughly the long 19th century. This production is examined in terms of its presence (in the context of different urbanizations), (under-)representation and visibility in the cityscape. To explain the specificity the study will focus on the origin and profile of female sculptors, their access to education and jobs. Aspects such as the precise location (outside-in, center-periphery, open-closed, religious-secular, etc.), the material used, the iconographic genre and style characteristics are discussed in the analysis of the particular profile of this sculpture production.
- Pendant des siècles, tant la sculpture que l’espace urbain ont été définis comme un domaine “masculin”. Toutefois, il y a sensiblement plus de femmes sculpteurs que supposé dont les sculptures reçurent une place déterminée dans des espaces (semi)-publics, également dans les métropoles artistiques, et cela depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle. A quel point cette donnée s’écarte-t-elle des rôles masculin-féminin établis, et peut-elle infirmer la soi-disant exclusion des femmes de la sphère publique, ou confirme-t-elle justement cette théorie? Pour la première fois, des sculptures (semi-)publiques réalisées par des femmes dans une métropole, en particulier Bruxelles, Paris et Londres ont été mises sur carte couvrant une période de presque deux siècles, en gros tout le XIXe siècle. Cette production a été étudiée au niveau de sa présence (dans le contexte des différentes urbanisations), de sa (sous)représentation et de sa visibilité dans le paysage urbain. Pour expliquer cette spécificité, l’étude s’est portée sur l’origine et le profil des femmes sculpteurs, leur accès à la formation et au travail. Des aspects comme la localisation précise (extérieur-intérieur, centre-périphérie, ouvert-fermé, religieux-profane, etc.), le matériau utilisé, le genre iconographique et les caractéristiques stylististiques seront discutés lors de l’analyse d’un éventuel profil particulier de cette production de sculpture.
