La Sainte Eucharistie en guise de nourriture: hérésie ou miracle? Une enquête à Courtrai de l'official de Tournai et de l'inquisiteur au milieu du XVe siècle

Abstract
Cases of holy anorexia have been extensively studied from hagiographical material. The recognition of a reputation for sanctity entails notoriety, even at present. Though a diversity of sources attests to Mijnkin, a woman of Courtrai (diocese of Tournai), as to a concrete case of self-starvation, linked with a craving for daily communion, duke Philip the Good, and John Chevrot, bishop of Tournai, approach her from February 1445 to October 1448 with a vivid suspicion and disbelief. After a thorough examination, in June 1445, of Mijnkin by John Lamelin, official of Tournai, and Anthony Kien, the inquisitor, no firm conclusion is reached. In a written account of this examination to his bishop, John Lamelin emphasizes some striking similarities of the case of Mijnkin with the one of Lidwina of Schiedam (d. 1433). Meanwhile, since February 1445, the city council of Courtrai squarely supports the claims of Mijnkin, and invests heavily in building her a house, adjacent to the parish church of St. Martin. After a trial period, from June 1445 to June 1446, the local vicar, Géry of Houstrate, is allowed to administer to Mijnkin the daily Eucharist. Mijnkin's state of health continues to deteriorate to the point where the threat of scandal gets overpowering, bringing the duke and the bishop in October 1448 to the decision to have Mijnkin removed from her local scene of believers. Her destination is unknown, but it probably is a strict monastery, secluded from pilgrims and fellow townspeople. The combined decision of duke and bishop to end the local cult of Mijnkin, grudgingly agreed to and brutally implemented by the city councillors, clearly signalled to potential biographers of Mijnkin the inadmissibility of such an endeavour.
