Abstract
Research on Media and Children has extensively analysed questions of possible effects of media commercialization, sexualization and violence on children. However, there is a tendency to leave out non-fictional forms of media such as news, which is believed to address an adult audience (Ponte 2007, Buckingham, 1997). Since news has widely been recognized to play an important role in the construction of social reality, this work investigates how power structures in Albanian media, prevent social issues related to children from being represented in the news. As a country in transition which lacks independent and professional media, Albania is a good setting to explore the potential of news to represent “what is there to see” in the social domain.
