'Siffler les vices et les laideurs de la civilisation…' Het groteske oeuvre van James Ensor en de Encyclopédie de la caricature van Jules Champfleury

Abstract
A crucial question in the interpretation of the oeuvre of James Ensor concerns the origin of the grotesque and the motif of the mask, as introduced from 1885/86 on. This article argues that the dominant romantic, psychological interpretation, linked to the portrait of the artist as a 'genius', should make place for a anthropological approach. Ensor did not invent by himself, but discovered the repressed 'world of the grotesque' in a series of publications by Jules Champfleury on "L'Histoire de la caricature". Many of his drawings and paintings, and his own understanding of the role of art and the artist, are borrowed from or directly inspired by Champfleury.
