Abstract
The article examines the literary representation of neonaticide, the killing of newborns, mostly by the mother, in Scandinavian texts from the 19th and 20th century. It analyses how the topic is discussed with reference to changing judicial practices and moral ideas of the time. Investigating the texts’ aesthetic strategies and its emotional effects on the reader the article shows that most of the texts debate the problematic situation of a young mother committing infanticide, but ignore the role of the father. It is not until the 20th century that the responsibility and the guilt of the fathers are discussed in more detail. Thus, the article can give insight into the relevance of literary texts on infanticide for cultural history on the one hand and changing gender relations on the other.
