- Abstract
- The present study explores the aspect of the actual adoption of didactical strategies by teacher educators and perceived adoption by student teachers in Pakistan initial teacher education (ITE) programmes. Both teacher educators (N=32) and student teachers (N= 250) participated in the study. Survey instrument was administered to the respondents related to their adoption of didactical strategies. The aim of the study was to describe and explain the perceived adoption of particular didactical strategies of student teachers and the actual adoption by teacher educators in real classroom practices. The results of the current study reveal an overall low-level adoption of varying types of didactical strategies from teacher educators and student teachers. In a comparative aspect, teacher educators’ actual adoption of all types of didactical strategies was higher than the student teachers’ perceived adoption. The study recommends certain measures for policy makers, curriculum developers and heads of initial teacher education institutions that prepare future teachers in Pakistan. The findings of the study also call for the implementation of student-centered didactical approaches for successful and goal-oriented teaching and learning in the initial teacher education system in Pakistan.
