Using a building information modelling approach for teaching about residential energy use and official energy performance

Abstract
This paper describes a pragmatic building information modelling approach for teaching about residential energy use and official energy performance. This approach was first tested in the context of a student exercise on design guidelines for nearly zero energy dwellings. In particular, we provide the details about the BIM approach and discuss several benefits and drawbacks that were experienced during the student exercise. It is concluded that the proposed approach has proven to be an added value in the context of the students exercise, however, several points of improvement are identified for future research.
