Bridging the gap in peer feedback research : a case study from translation training in an online trans-Atlantic collaboration project

- In recent years translation training in higher education has seen some arguments for innovative approaches which would increase the trainees' own responsibility for learning collaboratively (e.g. Gambier 2012; Huertas Barros 2011; Kenny 2008; Kiraly 2000; O’Brien 2010-2013). Empirical research showing the benefits of these online approaches, however, has remained largely behind. It is our aim to present the results of a cross-over designed pilot study involving translation trainees collaborating via the internet not only with each other but also with technical writers in the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (Maylath, et al. 2012). Our focus is on the impact of peer feedback on the trainees' translation competences as assessed by their translations. The study reveals that results are small and variable; in addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed design of the study are discussed.
