Abstract
Starting from the theoretical models of social reproduction and cultural mobility, we focus on the relationship between social background, extracurricular arts education (EAE) and school performance. We use data collected from 2845 students from the fifth and sixth grade of primary education in 68 Flemish schools. Based on multilevel regression analysis, the results indicate that participation in EAE is positively associated with students’ SES-backgrounds and SES- school composition. However, no support is found for a reinforcing or compensatory function of a high SES-composition regarding social inequalities in EAE-participation. Next, results indicate that the effects of EAE are highly depend on students’ SES-backgrounds, but not on the SES-composition of the school. The results render more support for the social reproduction theory. Suggestions are provided how further research may use other measurements of arts education, and school characteristics to provide more insight into the relationship between arts education and school performance.
