Abstract
In this article, the author develops one of the underpinning hypotheses of the author's earlier contributions on the same subject , underlining the importance of political networks, French royal succession rules and natural offspring legitimation for the interpretation of the French army’s actions in the Spanish Netherlands during the 1707 and 1708 campaigns. They explain why an objective account of the famous Battle of Oudenarde (11th july 1708) is almost irrelevant. Jurists and historians alike should focus on society structure, instrumentalisation of glorious events and the encompassing framework of legal norms within which the political “battles” take place. The article is an elaborated summary of a substantial part of the author's Master’s Thesis in History on the 1707 and 1708 campaigns and negotiations.
