Time resolved analysis of the moisture dynamics of plywood

abstract
Plywood for use class 3 is exposed to outdoor conditions without ground-contact. Physical and biological factors impact on and can decrease performance (service life). Detailed monitoring of plywood in the field might resolve its behaviour when subjected to cycles of varying rain events, solar radiation, wind speed, etc. While logging weather data, measurement of the moisture of plywood samples was done with the CMM (Continuous Moisture Measurement) device at the Laboratory of Wood Technology at Ghent University (UGent). Time series analysis of moisture data is complex and many techniques are available of which some of them are explored briefly. Clearly, water immersion tests performed in the lab are similar with CMM results during rain events. At last, prediction of the moisture behaviour of plywood with a neural net-based engineering system can be a useful tool in service life prediction.
