Abstract
The raw material this essay is based upon, was gathered in Butembo between 2008 and 2009. Georg Simmel’s ideas on the form of history in mind, I have rewritten the previous analysis of these ethnographical data. Simmel’s ideas allow for a deeper understanding of the pursuit of pleasure in Butembo, and the way this pursuit is related and remembered by its citizens. Situated right in the middle of the tormented Kivu provinces, the city knows a peculiar mixture of leisure and loathing, indeed, two dramatically opposed atmospheres. These two atmospheres both crystallize at one particular site, called Kikyo, today an infamous lieu de mémoire in the city of Butembo.
