Water footprint assessment: the environmental impact of corrugated cardboard packaging for fruits and vegetables in Italy

Abstract
LCA assessments are confronting a new environmental indicator: the Water Footprint (WF). In past years analyzes related to specific and complex pathways, as the marketing of fruit and vegetables, have focused their research and communication on "traditional" indicators (Global Warming, kg CO2 eq; Use of Non-renewable Resources, MJ eq; etc.). Objective of this research is to move a first step in the quantification of the WF of this particular distribution chain. The method used is the same as proposed by WF Network: from the definition of goals and objectives to the quantification of the WF. In this work we present a case study about the Consortium Bestack (Italian Consortium of producers of corrugated packaging for fruit and vegetables). In conclusion we identify relevant variables of the related impacts, proposing some solutions for improvement.
