Synthesis and photoluminescent characteristics of Al2O3 thin films doped with CaS:Eu2+

Abstract
CaS:Eu2+ particles coated with Al2O3 thin layers were prepared in order to obtain stable phosphor layers. Al2O3 condensed solutions were synthesized using two different nonaqueous sol-gel processes. Monodisperse, octahedral CaS:Eu2+ particles were prepared by a solvothermal route. Silicon substrates were first covered with CaS:Eu2+ and then they were coated with Al2O3 condensed solutions using spin coating. The thin films had a broad emission band with an emission peak at 650 nm. The composition and morphology of the coatings were studied using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis.
