Abstract
In this PhD-thesis urban space of medieval Brussels, one of the capital cities in the duchy of Brabant, is studied and analysed in a multidisciplinary approach. New methodologies are developed for studying the oldest town plans, building history and the huge mass of toponymic material. The multidisciplinary approach leaded to totally new hypothesises about urban development of medieval Brussels. It seems that the Coudenberg was the oldest settlement and that the valley and banks of the Senne river were reclaimed and cultivated gradually.
Keywords
Brussels, urban space, cartography, toponymy, urban morphology, town development
