Autorität und Servilität. Die Dialektik der Macht - ideologisch und textstrategisch - in Robert Walsers Erzählung Tobold (II)

Jaak De Vos UGent (2009) Neulektüren - New Readings. p.127-147
abstract
Though the character Tobold appears in several different texts and constellations, rather little attention has been paid so far to Robert Walser’s curious figure. Research has mostly confined its findings to autobiographical correspondences. This paper concentrates upon the Tobold (II)-Fragment. An effort is made to discern and analyze what seems to be/stands out as the most apparent and effective feature of what might be called the Tobold-Type: through a strategic and subversive combination of authoritarian and submissive impulses, a servant or pupil not only gains power and dominancy over superiors and rulers, but also manages to fulfill the self’s ambivalent aspirations. Tobold’s identity is a staged one, built upon fantasies, role playing, and stereotyped representations of the social context. Especially in the interaction with stylistic, narrative and rhetoric characteristics (irony, paradoxes, tautological abundance, fragmentation, anecdotic, erratic and drifting telling), the text’s ideological strategy becomes obvious: Tobold (II), through its insurgent, rebellious agent, is subverting a social and moral order, as it is manipulating and deregulating the reader’s system: Walser’s tendency to balance, neutralize and compensate all tensions creates a permanent deconstructive strain, which leads inevitably to ambiguity and indecision.
