Abstract
Like many other aspects of the history of the institution, the socio-professional status of the registrars of the Council of Flanders has been anything but clear to date. This category of employees was long ranked among the lower staff. However, past research indicated that the profile of registrars or secretaries of provincial courts rather matched that of lawyers or even councillors. In this paper, the knowledge background of registrars entering their position is used as an indicator of their socio-professional status. Data on any university training and career before they became registrars confirms that the registrarship at least resembled a career at the Bar and in fact was even considered as a step beyond. In other words, the registrars could be situated in between the levels of the lawyers and the corpus of the Council. They were both jurists and 'hands-on' experts.
Keywords
Belgium, Council of Flanders, Early modern period (1400-1800), registrars, education, prosopography, status, experience
