Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in a six-month-old Cocker Spaniel : a case report

Abstract
A six-month-old female English Cocker Spaniel was presented with severe acute respiratory distress, coughing, retching, and anorexia. On physical examination, muffled lung sounds were heard and three gingival masses were detected. Multiple soft tissue opacities within the lungs and nnediastinum were found during radiographic screening of the thorax. A large heterogeneous mass occupied the entire left side of the thorax, silhouetting with the diaphragm and the liver. On ultrasonography of the abdomen, a mass in the cranial pole of the left kidney, a mass caudal to the left kidney and several masses compatible with mesenteric lymphadenopathy were identified. Euthanasia was advised because of the suspicion of neoplasia with extensive metastatic spread. A necropsy was performed and histopathological examination of the masses revealed the presence of an undifferentiated sarcoma with multiple organ involvement. The presence of this type of sarcoma and the extensive metastatic spread are rare in such a young dog.
