- Abstract
- In this catalogue text for the exhibition of the Dutch artist Elly Strik in the Reina Sofia in Madrid her is analysed, starting out from the 'primitive' and mythological sources that survive in it, in particular the archaic ambivalence of femininity - the 'female animal'. The text discusses the way Strik represents this concept of threatening femininity through the signifier of 'hair' or 'hairiness'. The ambiguous interference of the medium of drawing - in which the lines always resemble 'hair' - in the representation of hair is at the core of Strik's work.
