Abstract
This paper discusses the views of the Gent historian of religions Franz Cumont on the competition between the Oriental Religions, specifically Mithraism, and Christiainty, in comparison with the views of Ernest Renan who famously wrote that the world would have become Mithraic if the growth of Christianity had been stopped.
