Small versus medium-sized mass participation events: what can they bring?

Abstract
Sport events gain increasing attention in academic literature and positive as well as negative effects are found. However, a difference in event size can be noticed. In this research, we look at different effects of two small sport events (SSE) and one medium-sized sport event (MSE). Compared to mega-events, smaller events require less investments, show larger social advantages, have marketing potential for the host city and may influence enduring sport participation. Data was collected during the 2012 editions of three running events in Belgium. Surveys included demographic information, questions about the perception of the event, consumer behaviour and motivational elements for participation. Results showed that participants of the MSEs increased the intention to exercise due to the event compared to those of the SSEs, a significant difference was found between the main motives to participate and both SSEs and MSE have potential for tourism objectives. Both event types have the potential to create added but a clear difference is distinguished between small and medium-sized sport events.
