Can we develop farm-specific models for assessing the cost/benefits of TST approaches?

Abstract
Targeted selective treatment (TST) approaches have shown benefits in terms of reduced anthelmintic use and maintained drug efficacy. However they may also incur additional diagnostic and labour costs and the full farm-level economic implications remain often unclear. A stochastic cost-benefit assessment of whole herd vs. more selective treatment approaches shows that the economic effectiveness of TST approaches depends on a multitude of factors such as output prices, cost of treatment indicator, accuracy of treatment indicator, infection level, herd size and animal factors. Therefore, we need tools that can assess the farm-specific cost/benefits of TST approaches. However, the development of such tools that are flexible, accessible and sustainable is challenging. In an attempt to address these challenges, we developed ParaCalc® as a open-access platform where different web-based tools to estimate the economic effects of parasitic infections and their treatment approaches can be posted. The models are developed in the statistical language R and converted into interactive web applications via the Shiny server. In the future, different models allowing for different TST-approaches can be added to this framework.
