Associations of dietary glycemic index and glycemic load with glucose intolerance in Iranian adults

- This study examined the association of dietary related factors such as glycemic index and glycemic load, with glucose intolerance in Iranian adults in 2008. The study had cross-sectional design and data were obtained from the Isfahan Healthy Heart Programme (2000-2001). Data on food intake (using a 24-hour recall) and blood parameters of a subsample of 960 adults age ≥ 19 years were used. The percentage of male and female were 45.4% and 54.6% respectively with the mean age of 38.3 years (SD=15.43). We identified a positive significant association of fasting and postprandial blood glucose (P < 0.001), body mass index (P < 0.001), and age (P < 0.001) with diabetes mellitus, whereas there was no statistically significant association of dietary related factors and diabetes mellitus after adjusting for BMI, age, gender, and smoking as confounding factors. We concluded that the use of low glycemic index diet may not play an important role in the prevalence of glucose intolerance.
