- Abstract
- In early Buddhist literature, the concept of 'dependent origination' is explained through a variety of numeric formulas, containing 5, 7, 8, 10 or 12 elements. In a later period the twelve-membered formula developed as the standard formula to explain the concept of 'dependent origination'. The earlier formula of 10 members, however, became important with the philosophical development of Mahayana Buddhism. This article discusses the importance for the Mahayana of this ten-membered formula.
