Abstract
Tall fescue and Italian rye grass are two complementary species that are well adapted to intensive mowing regimes. A trial was carried out over 3 years combining these 2 species in order to evaluate different production factors: mixed crops with varying ratios of Italian ryegrass (diploid and tetraploid) (ratios of 1/4 and 1/8 at seeding) were compared with single stand crops (nitrogen input 300 kg N/ha/year). A second trial was carried out which included red clover and limited nitrogen input 120 kg N/ha/year. Over 3 years, no significant differences were observed: the mixed crops were found to compensate for the low yield of tall fescue in the 1st year, and the low persistence of Italian ryegrass in the 2nd year. Although the ratio of tall fescue is satisfactory in a mixed crop with red clover, it remains low in a mixed crop with both Italian ryegrass and red clover.
