- Abstract
- This is review of the show 'Space Control' by undergraduate sculptors of 'Saint Lucas College of Art Gent' that took place in the Kuvataideakatemia in Helsinki from Februari 20th till March 3rd, 2006. It considers the question whether there is a difference between conceptual art and experimental art. The answer is that indeed there is. From a philosophical point of view conceptual art is theoretical, whereas experimental art is practical. While theoretical art, focussing on representation, tends to conceal the perceptible in favour of expressing meaning, truth, emotion, reality, etc., practical art is an exercise in mastering (controlling) of the phenomenal, the perceptible. The common denominator of the works participating in the exhibition 'Space Control' is 'practical art', because they consist in a sculptural exploration of perceptible space.
